Prof. Trabert: There are Serious Health Problems in Rojava Due to the Embargo

One of the top regions Prof. Dr. Gerhard Trabert, founder and chairperson of the prominent German NGO Poverty and Health Association (Armut und Gesundheit e.V.) is interested in has been Rojava for a while. Trabert has visited the region several times and inspected medical services provided in situ, ANF reported.

He has been helping to alleviate the problems Western Kurdistan (Rojava) and Syria have been having in the medical area. Prof. Dr. Trabert and his team had visited Rojava in July to provide at least some medicine in July.

Prof. Dr. Trabert returned to Germany recently, and addressed yesterday to members of the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development in the German Parliament about the situation in Rojava.

Turkey’s threat to launch a new military offensive in northern Syria has resulted in the withdrawal of many aid organizations from Rojava, according to Gerhard Trabert of Rhein-Main University of Applied Sciences. As a result, the already difficult health care in the area would continue to worsen, the physician from Mainz warned on Wednesday in the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development.

Miscarriage rate doubles

“Since the threat of another military attack by Turkey, miscarriage rates have doubled, according to local doctors,” said Trabert. There is a lack of doctors, psychiatrists, medical devices and medicines everywhere.

Hundreds of thousands have died due to lack of medical care

Since the beginning of the war, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 people have died due to lack of or insufficient medical treatment, reported the German doctor.

Trabert appealed to the federal government to cooperate with the self-government of the Rojava region; “Rojava is a well-organized democratic area, but there are serious health problems due to the embargo. We must not leave the region alone.”

Pointing to the difficulties caused by the fact that the only access to the region is through northern Iraq, Trabert added; “There are no transparent criteria for crossing the border, so aid deliveries often do not take place or are delayed. Germany and the EU should exert influence on their NATO partner Turkey, because of the renewed threat against the region.”
