16th Anniversary of the PYD Celebrated in Vienna

The event, which was held in the Döbling Volkshochschule hall, began with a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of the Rojava revolution.

Following the opening speech, a video about the story of the PYD was shown.

Rivar Diyar Derar, co-chair of the Democratic Syrian Assembly, Agirî Kobanê, PYD Vienna representative, and Anton Mandl, Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPÖ), addressed the crowd.

Rivar Diyar Derar, co-chair of the Democratic Syrian Assembly, said that when the Syrian war started, the Kurds got organized not only to protect themselves but to establish a new life model.

Derar noted that the northern Syrian people established a democratic system based on the ideas of Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan and that they will continue to walk along the path shown by Öcalan.

PYD Vienna representative, Agirî Kobanê, commemorated the PYD politicians who were killed by the Baath regime in 2003 when the PYD was founded.

“PYD had martyrs, and this is a party that walks on the path of martyrs”, he said.

SPÖ politician Anton Mandl, former deputy-mayor of the 19th Vienna municipality, said he strongly supports the Kurdish people’s struggle for freedom and democracy.

Mandl said that he was grateful to the YPG and the Kurds, especially the female fighters, for the war against the mercenaries beginning with ISIS, and added that they would continue to support their struggles.

Artists from Group Midya (Jin), Koma Rojava, Ednan & Nısrın and Peyman Arjin closed the event.
